Crowdsourced vs Verified Food Databases: Which Is More Accurate?
MyFitnessPal's 14M-entry catalog versus Cronometer's 1.2M USDA-aligned database — and what the size-versus-accuracy trade-off actually costs you
The Two Database Models
Calorie tracker databases come in two flavors with very different design philosophies.
Model 1: Crowdsourced (user-submitted)
Users add entries to the database. Light or no verification before the entry becomes searchable. Volume scales with user count. Examples: MyFitnessPal’s main catalog, Lose It!‘s main catalog, FatSecret, Yazio’s user-submitted layer.
Strengths:
- Massive coverage, including regional, international, and obscure foods.
- Fast scaling — a new restaurant chain or product gets entries quickly.
- Long-tail handling — almost any food has an entry somewhere.
Weaknesses:
- Variance per food. The same item is entered by different users with different measurements.
- No source provenance. You cannot tell whether the values came from a label, a guess, or another database.
- First-result variance is high. Users default to the first hit, which may be far from typical values.
Model 2: Verified (curated)
Entries come from authoritative sources (USDA FoodData Central, Canadian Nutrient File, EuroFIR, manufacturer feeds) or pass staff review before going live. Volume is smaller but per-entry accuracy is higher. Examples: Cronometer’s main catalog, MacroFactor, PlateLens, the verified-layer subsets in MyFitnessPal and Lose It!.
Strengths:
- Narrow variance per food.
- Source provenance documented.
- First-result accuracy is high.
- Scientifically defensible values.
Weaknesses:
- Smaller catalog. Regional and obscure foods often missing.
- Slower scaling — new entries require curation work.
- Restaurant chain coverage often shallower than crowdsourced catalogs.
These are different products solving different problems. The key insight: size and accuracy are different metrics, and most reviews conflate them.
What the Numbers Actually Look Like
We ran a 50-food search audit across mainstream trackers in early 2026. For each of 50 common foods, we recorded:
- Number of search results.
- Variance in calories per serving across the top 10 results.
- Whether the first result was within ±10% of the USDA SR Legacy reference value.

The pattern is consistent: crowdsourced databases return more results with wider variance and lower first-result accuracy. Curated databases return fewer results with narrower variance and higher first-result accuracy.
For a user who picks the first result and moves on (which is most users), the curated databases produce calorie estimates that are roughly twice as likely to be within ±10% of true values.
Why Variance Compounds Across a Day
A single food log with 19% variance is not a disaster. The user picks a result; if it is off by 15% on a 200-calorie snack, that is 30 calories of error.
The problem is compounding. Across 5-7 daily food logs, individual variance compounds into total daily error. The math:
If individual food errors are independent and roughly normally distributed with standard deviation of 10-15%, the total daily error has standard deviation of roughly:
σ_daily = √(n × σ_per_food²)
For 6 daily food logs with 12% per-food standard deviation:
σ_daily ≈ √(6 × 0.12²) ≈ 0.29
That is roughly ±29% standard deviation in the daily total. In practice the DAI Six-App Validation Study measured slightly tighter overall MAPE (around ±18% for MyFitnessPal) because errors are not perfectly independent — there is some correlation across the day. But the directional point holds: per-food variance compounds into daily noise.
For curated databases with 4-6% per-food variance, the daily compounding produces ±5-7% total noise. That is the gap between MyFitnessPal’s ±18% and Cronometer’s ±5.2% in the DAI study.
When Crowdsourced Wins
There are use cases where crowdsourced databases are the better tool:

Restaurant chains and regional players: MyFitnessPal has entries for chains and regional brands that Cronometer simply does not have. For users who eat at chains 4+ times a week, the coverage gap in curated databases forces frequent custom-entry creation.

International and ethnic foods: A regional Korean side dish, a kosher deli sandwich, a pan-Asian ingredient — crowdsourced databases catch the long tail.

Brand-new products: A new packaged product hits MyFitnessPal within days; it may take months to appear in Cronometer.

Habit-building users: A user whose primary goal is “log every meal, build the habit” may genuinely benefit from broader coverage. Whether the entry is ±5% or ±15% off does not change whether the habit forms.
This is a real argument for crowdsourced databases that we want to acknowledge.
When Curated Wins
The cases for curated databases are stronger when accuracy matters:

Measured cuts and recomp: ±18% daily noise can erase a 250-calorie deficit. Curated databases preserve the deficit signal.

Clinical contexts: PCOS, diabetes, kidney disease, autoimmune. The micronutrient depth and per-food precision matter.

Micronutrient tracking: Curated databases (especially USDA-aligned) have the depth to track 84+ micros. Crowdsourced databases do not have the data structure.

Recipe building: Recipe macros compound user-submitted variance. Building a recipe in Cronometer from FDC-backed ingredients produces a recipe whose values you can trust; building the same recipe in MyFitnessPal compounds the variance of each ingredient.

Long-term consistency: A curated database does not change values dramatically as users add new entries. Your “100 g chicken breast” entry will give the same value next year as today. Crowdsourced databases drift over time as users add and edit.
What “Verified” Badges Actually Mean
In MyFitnessPal and Lose It!, “verified” entries exist within the larger crowdsourced catalog. The verification badge typically means:
- The entry is sourced from USDA FoodData Central, or
- The values have been confirmed by the manufacturer, or
- The entry has passed a staff verification review.
In our testing, MyFitnessPal’s verified-only filter (Premium feature) produces accuracy comparable to Cronometer for whole foods. The catch: most users do not switch on the filter. The default search returns mixed results, and the user defaults to the first hit.
If you use a crowdsourced tracker, switch on the verified filter (Premium). It closes most of the database-quality gap.
The Hybrid Strategy
Some users adopt a hybrid approach:
- Use Cronometer or PlateLens as primary tracker for groceries, home cooking, and most logging.
- Use MyFitnessPal selectively for chain restaurants and regional foods that the curated tracker lacks.
This produces curated-quality accuracy for most logs while preserving crowdsourced coverage for the long tail. The downside is logging in two apps and reconciling daily totals. We do not recommend it for most users — pick one and live with the trade-offs — but it is a real strategy in our reader survey.
How to Evaluate Your Current Tracker
Three quick checks:

Search for “100 g cooked chicken breast”. The USDA SR Legacy reference is approximately 165 calories, 31 g protein. If the top result is within ±10%, your default is reasonably accurate. If results vary widely (140 cal, 180 cal, 220 cal), the catalog is crowdsourced and you should switch on any verification filter available.

Check whether your daily totals correlate with body weight changes. If you are logging consistently and your daily total says deficit but your weight says surplus (or vice versa), database noise may be the cause. Curated trackers reduce this disconnect.

Look at recipe accuracy. Build a recipe with 5-7 ingredients in your tracker. Compare the resulting macro totals to a reference like USDA’s recipe builder or a manual calculation. If the macros are far off, the underlying database has variance you should know about.
Bottom Line
Crowdsourced databases are big and noisy. Curated databases are small and tight. The best tracker for you depends on whether your priority is breadth (crowdsourced) or accuracy (curated).
For the DAI Six-App Validation Study the verdict is clear: USDA-aligned curated databases produce 3-15x tighter daily MAPE than user-submitted catalogs. If accuracy is your priority, prefer Cronometer, MacroFactor, or PlateLens; if breadth is your priority, MyFitnessPal or Lose It! with the verified filter on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does MyFitnessPal have 14M entries and Cronometer only 1.2M?
Different curation models. MyFitnessPal accepts user submissions broadly with light verification. Cronometer requires entries to either come from USDA FoodData Central, a manufacturer-verified source, or pass staff review before going live. The result: bigger versus tighter.
Is bigger always worse?
No. For coverage of regional foods, restaurant chains, and international packaged goods, bigger wins. MyFitnessPal will find an entry for almost anything; Cronometer often will not. The trade is breadth versus per-entry accuracy.
How much variance does crowdsourcing add?
In our 50-food search audit, MyFitnessPal returned a median variance of 19% across the top 10 search results per food. Cronometer returned 6%. The user has to choose; most pick the first result, which is often within 10-15% of the actual value but can be wildly off.
What is a 'verified' badge on MyFitnessPal?
An entry that is either USDA-aligned, manufacturer-confirmed, or has passed MyFitnessPal's verification review. These exist within the 14M catalog but are not the default sort. Filtering to verified-only is a Premium feature.
Do I need a verified database for my use case?
For habit-building and casual tracking, no. For measured cuts, recomp, clinical, or any context where ±300 cal of daily noise is unacceptable, yes — and you should pick a USDA-aligned tracker (Cronometer, MacroFactor, PlateLens) or actively use the verified filter in MyFitnessPal/Lose It! Premium.
